History

Dambulla Cave Temple

This historic temple dates way back to the first century BCE and the largest and best-preserved cave temple complex in Sri Lanka. The rock towers 160 m (520 ft) over the surrounding plains. There are more than 80 documented caves in the surrounding. Major attractions are spread over 5 caves, which contain statues and paintings. These paintings and statues are related to Lord Buddha and his life. There are a total of 153 Buddha statues, three statues of Sri Lankan kings and four statues of god and goddess. The latter four include two statues of Hindu gods, Vishnu and Ganesh. The murals cover an area of 2,100 m2. Depictions in the walls of the caves include Buddha’s temptation by demon Mara and Buddha’s first sermon.

Geography of Dambulla Sri Lanka

Dambulla is the main town of the North of Matale District. It is approximately 156 kilometers south of Colombo and the 43 km (27 mi) north of Matale and 72 km (45 mi) north of Kandy. Due to its location at a major junction, it is the center of vegetable distribution in the country.

How to Reach Dambulla by Bus ?

Generally, buses from Colombo and Kandy starts it will take you to Dambulla If you journey from Colombo, it will take around 5 hours to reach Dambulla. On the other hand, if you take the Kandy to the Dambulla bus route, it will take around 2 hours as well.

How to Reach Dambulla by Train?

Take bus 187 From Airport to Colombo “Fort Railway Station” for around 100 Rupees. You can purchase a 2nd or 3rd class ticket to Dambulla when you arrive at the railway station the cost will be 1 to 3 $ and it will take 2 hours to reach Habaran. from Habarana you need to take a bus or taxi to Dambulla. Don’t expect to get a seat on this train as they are generally always packed.
